BUYING A CHIHUAHUA
NCCC know of many people who have attempted to purchase Chihuahua puppies over the phone, the Internet and adverts in various publications, where the seller has asked for a deposit before the potential buyer has even been to view the dog. The seller may give the excuse that a deposit is required up front to cover shipment costs or other charges incurred before a puppy can be sold.
We as a breed club are gravely concerned that several people who have paid money as a 'deposit', particularly through adverts on the Internet, have not only lost their money, but also do not get a puppy.
We strongly recommend that all potential purchases of Chihuahua puppies do not buy over the Internet, but rather buy them from reputable breeders. In all instances it should be possible to see the puppy's mother, father and siblings.
It is with great sadness that the breed has seen a huge increase in popularity in recent years due to extensive media coverage, and tiny dogs such as Chihuahuas being seen as a cute fashion accessory. This hype may have encouraged people who have no real long-term interest in the breed to buy them, and worse still, breed from them to jump on the band-wagon and make a quick profit.
We would advise people who are serious about buying a Chihuahua to very carefully consider where they buy from. Not only are there people who are fraudulent, but also people who do not breed for any other reason than to make as much money as they can. This goal does not benefit the puppy, the breed, or the buyer.
Please telephone the Kennel Club or breed club secretary to enquire if there are any puppies for sale in your area.
The members of this club are bound by a strict CODE OF ETHICS which should help to protect puppies and new owners alike.
